I believe what makes great Australian architecture is the genuineness that comes from the honesty and relaxed demeanor of Australian culture. These buildings are deeply grounded within the vernacular of the Australian environment and contain a sense of joy with subtitle whimsical notes. There is also a sense of timelessness that accompanies great Australian architecture as well as all great architecture in general and the examples I have used and researched as inspiration for my works are not in line with the time of their inception and appear to be almost “contemporary” resistant. I credit this to the meticulous craftsmanship, push for practicality and the honesty to the landscape. They are still stunningly beautiful and extremely relevant in present times. Great Australian architecture has an emphasis on celebrating the tectonics of the built form as well as inferring the massing to suit passive design techniques. Furthermore, research and vigorous testing of materials leading to them to be used in ways that are not generally associated with their original intended purpose create interest within a space. A wall is not any longer a wall but perhaps it’s a roof instead maybe it’s something in-between great Australian architects have a keen sense for using materials in a subversive way. All these facets combined create an architecture which is unique to Australia.
